The 37th Meeting of the Network for investigation and prosecution of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes (Genocide Network) took place this week at Eurojust. This biannual meeting brought together judicial and investigative authorities, representatives from civil society and NGOs, as well as other specialised experts to discuss the latest developments in the fight against impunity.

The two-day meeting included presentations on the crime of genocide, including on its historical origins and contemporary developments. The prosecution of genocide cases against ISIL members in Germany and the first genocide conviction in Sweden linked to the enslavement and forcible transfer of Yazidi children were notably discussed.

Other topics covered included, amongst others, the legal challenges in developing genocide cases and the prosecution of incitement to genocide.

This meeting was chaired by the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU and organised by the Genocide Network Secretariat, with the support of Eurojust. The Genocide Network Secretariat was established in 2011 and is hosted by Eurojust, who also has an Observer Status within the Network.

The Genocide Network provides a unique platform for international cooperation and coordination in the fight against genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. Their biannual meetings underscore the importance of sustained efforts to prevent and punish these atrocities, and to ensure justice and accountability for victims and affected communities.
