Mr Stewart Robinson appointed
new Liaison Prosecutor for the USA at Eurojust
On 17 October 2011, Mr Stewart Robinson was appointed Liaison Prosecutor for the USA at Eurojust, in accordance with Article 5 of the Agreement between Eurojust and the USA of 6 November 2006, and following his designation by the United States Department of Justice (DoJ) to be its Senior Counsel for the European Union and International Law Enforcement Matters at the US Mission to the European Union in Brussels, Belgium. The former Liaison Prosecutor for the USA at Eurojust, Ms Mary Lee Warren, returned to Washington in the fall of 2011.
Prior to his appointment, Mr Robinson served as the Principal Deputy Director of the DoJ’s Office of International Affairs (OIA). The OIA is the point of contact for all US interaction with countries around the world in matters relating to the extradition of international fugitives, and acts as the central authority in requests to obtain information and evidence in criminal investigations and prosecutions pursuant to all US mutual legal assistance treaties (MLATs).
Mr Robinson has served as the Director of the International Coordinators’ Program of the DoJ, providing direct liaison with each of the 93 United States Attorneys’ Offices on international issues. He has also been responsible for establishing and maintaining operational posts abroad through placement of DoJ Attachés at US Embassies around the world.
Representing the DoJ, Mr Robinson has negotiated bilateral extradition treaties and MLATs. He has also participated in international expert groups in matters relating to law enforcement for the United Nations and other fora. He has served as a state and federal prosecutor, and has also been in private criminal law practice. Over the years, he has handled and supervised thousands of criminal matters.
Throughout his career, Mr Robinson has been involved in teaching and training attorneys and law enforcement personnel and, since 2004, has been an adjunct professor of law at several universities in the USA. Mr Robinson received his BA from the University of Texas at Austin, and his JD from the University of Texas School of Law.
On his appointment, Mr Robinson commented: “It is a privilege to have the opportunity to serve as the US Liaison Prosecutor at Eurojust. Criminal activity is increasingly global in its scope and in its corrosive impact upon the individuals who live and work in our communities. Close cooperation among nations is essential if we are to effectively fight serious cross-border crime. I look forward to being part of that cooperative effort, working with my colleagues at Eurojust.”
