Yesterday, a delegation of senior officials from the League of Arab States (LAS) visited Eurojust to pave the way for Eurojust – LAS cooperation in security-related aspects, particularly in countering terrorism and violent extremism. The visit was facilitated by the European External Action Service in the framework of the Strategic Dialogues between the EU and LAS on political and security matters.
The LAS delegation included law enforcement and judicial authorities, counter-terrorism experts and government officials from the LAS General Secretariat and LAS Member States.
The study visit provided an excellent opportunity for the LAS participants to familiarise themselves with the judicial response to terrorism in the EU Member States and the judicial cooperation facilitated by Eurojust. A constructive dialogue allowed Eurojust and LAS participants to exchange views on the implementation of the mutual legal recognition principle in the European Union, the possibilities for Eurojust to cooperate operationally and strategically with third States, the importance of information sharing on terrorist offences, the challenges encountered in investigations of foreign terrorist fighters and Eurojust’s support to joint investigation teams.
Eurojust and LAS will continue exploring possibilities for future cooperation and for inspiring stronger LAS regional judicial cooperation and coordination based on the long experience of Eurojust in fighting terrorism and organised crime.
The League of Arab States is a regional organisation bringing together all Arab countries, with the purpose of promoting and strengthening cooperation among its members.
