On 6 October, H.E. Ms Francisca Van Dunem, Minister of Justice of Portugal, visited Eurojust. The visit was hosted by Ms Michèle Coninsx, President of Eurojust, and Mr António Cluny, National Member for Portugal. The Minister was accompanied by Mr João Oliveira, Director of the Judicial Affairs Ministry, and Counselor Domingos Alvim, Chargé d’Affaires at the Portuguese Embassy.
The participants discussed the challenges faced by Eurojust, especially in light of the current security threat in the European Union. The delegation was informed about Eurojust’s role in the fight against organised crime and terrorism, also demonstrated by an increase in caseload. The delegation then visited the Portuguese Desk, where they were given insight into its casework.
Francisca Van Dunem was appointed Minister of Justice of Portugal in November 2015. Minister Van Dunem has long and varied experience in the public sector. She served as Magistrate of the Public Prosecutor since 1979, member of the Attorney General's Office between 1999 and 2001, Director of the Department of Investigation and Penal Action of Lisbon between 2001 and 2007, member of the EJN between 2003 and 2007, Attorney General of the District of Lisbon since February 2007, and member of the Superior Council of the Public Prosecutor.
