Ms Coninsx, the President of Eurojust, paid an official visit to the United States of America from 30 November to 5 December 2016.
At the invitation of the United Nations (UN) Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), Ms Coninsx addressed the UN Member States, relevant international and regional organisations, civil society and private sector on the growing threat from the abuse of the internet and social media for terrorist purposes. In her intervention, Ms Coninsx called for increased international judicial cooperation and close cooperation with Communication Service Providers. She underlined that efforts for stopping criminal activity online should go hand in hand with stopping the criminals through investigations, prosecutions and convictions.
Ms Coninsx also had the opportunity to participate in meetings to discuss cooperation with H.E. Mr João Vale de Almeida, the EU Ambassador to the United Nations and with H.E. Mr Marc Pecsteen de Buytswerve, Permanent Representative of Belgium to the United Nations.
At the end of her visit, Ms Coninsx made a joint presentation with Rob Wainwright, the Director of Europol, at the EU-US Justice and Home Affairs Ministerial Meeting held in Washington on 5 December. They highlighted the exemplary international cooperation between the EU and the US and the practical and strategic importance of Eurojust and Europol in the multinational cybercrime operation ‘Avalanche’.
