On 21 November, Eurojust hosted a visit of the Garde des Sceaux the Minister of Justice for France, Mr Jean-Jacques Urvoas. The President of Eurojust, Ms Michèle Coninsx, together with Mr Frédéric Baab, National Member for France, and the members of the French desk at Eurojust briefed the Minister on Eurojust’s work, especially in the context of the current security threat landscape.
After the visit, Ms Coninsx commented:
“It was a privilege receiving the French Minister of Justice and learning about his strong support to Eurojust’s work. This is reflected in the significant increase of requests for assistance coming from the French judicial authorities to Eurojust, from 97 in 2014 to 140 in 2015”.
Mr Baab commented:
"We are very pleased that the French Minister of Justice visited Eurojust; underlining the importance of Eurojust and to obtain first-hand information about the cross-border work in the fight against terrorism and migrant smuggling at European and international level. The visit paid by Mr Urvoas accentuates the strength of the commitment of the French Minister in this respect”.
During his visit to The Hague, the Minister also met with the Dutch Minister of Justice, Mr Ard van der Steur, and with Europol.
Jean-Jacques Urvoas was appointed Minister of Justice of France on 28 January 2016, Minister Urvoas is a Doctor in political science from Université de Bretagne Occidentale (UBO). Among a number of distinguished positions, the Minister was since 2007 vice president of the Socialists’ Group responsible for crime policy in the French parliament (i.e. l’Assemblée Nationale).
