On 14 July 2016, Ms Michèle Coninsx, President of Eurojust, spoke at the East Forum in Rome on the issue of immigration and security in Europe.
The organisers, Italian bank UniCredit in association with the geopolitics magazine Eastwest and the European Council on Foreign Relations, chose The New Europe: Migrations, Integration and Security, as the theme of the 11th East Forum, with panels discussing issues of demography, economy, European integration and security.
In a panel with Mr Franco Roberti, the General Attorney of National Antimafia Directorate in Italy, Ms Coninsx emphasized the need for EU Member States, Institutions and Justice and Home Affairs agencies (JHA) to adopt a coordinated and joint approach to prevent and fight foreign terrorist fighters and illegal immigrant smuggling networks.
The work of Eurojust in fighting cybercrime was also highlighted, both at operational and strategic levels. Ms Coninsx emphasized that Eurojust, by helping to coordinate actions across Member States’ different judicial systems and by providing support to JHA agencies and Member States in immigration Hotspots (i.e. Catania), is playing an important role in dismantling smuggling and trafficking networks. She stated that Eurojust’s role is to facilitate an effective judicial response to the challenges of illegal immigration and terrorism.
In addition to its work directly with Member States, Eurojust works closely with EUNAVFOR MED, an EU military operation launched on 22 June 2015, to identify, capture and dispose of vessels used by people smugglers.
