Today, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Italy to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, HE Francesco Azzarello, visited Eurojust. The meeting provided an important occasion to reinforce the already fruitful relationship between the Italian Desk at Eurojust and the Italian Embassy, and to ask the support of the Italian Ambassador to disseminate through the proper channels Eurojust’s activities and added value in the field of judicial cooperation.
The Ambassador was welcomed by the National Member for Italy, Mr Filippo Spiezia. He then met with the Italian Desk at Eurojust, after which he was received by the President of Eurojust, Ms Michèle Coninsx. Directly following this meeting with the President and Mr Spiezia, the Ambassador was joined by the Italian community working at Eurojust.
Ambassador Azzarello began his long and distinguished career in the Italian diplomatic service in 1986, posted to such far-flung locales as Teheran, Tirana, Adelaide and New York. In addition to his diplomatic post, he is also Italian Permanent Representative to the OPCW.
Between January 2012 and February 2016, a total of 427 cases were registered at Eurojust by the Italian Desk. Italian involvement has been requested in 881 cases in the same period. The most frequent crime types in the Eurojust cases registered by the Italy during this period are swindling and fraud and drug trafficking.
