The President of Eurojust, Ms Michèle Coninsx, on Monday 13 October gave a speech during the Falcone-Borsellino lecture series at the College of Europe, Bruges.
Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino were two distinguished Italian prosecutors assassinated in 1992 by the mafia.
In honour of the two magistrates, Ms Coninsx underlined that they were "heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice - their lives, in the fight against serious organised crime. More than twenty years ago, they realised the need for increased cross-border coordination. They had a vision of enhanced international cooperation in fighting crime, which Eurojust is now fulfilling”. Eurojust attended the ceremony in Palermo in 2012 to pay tribute to the work of the two prosecutors. Additionally, she presented the work of Eurojust, and engaged in a lively discussion with students.
Rector Jörg Monar of the College of Europe also commented that he felt quite convinced Falcone and Borsellino would have appreciated the work of Eurojust.
