Eurojust, Europol, Frontex and Interpol joined forces between 15 and 23 September in the largest ever joint operation to have taken place in the European Union. Eurojust provided judicial support during the planning and execution of the operation. Cooordinated and supported by Europol, Operation Archimedes targeted organised crime groups operating throughout the European Union.
In addition to all Member States, Australia, Colombia, Norway, Serbia, Switzerland and the USA (ICE and CBP) took part in the operation.
The focus of Operation Archimedes was the nine EMPACT priority crime areas, part of the EU’s multi-annual policy cycle: trafficking in human beings, trafficking of synthetic drugs, trafficking in cocaine and heroin, trafficking in firearms, property crime, cybercrime, excise fraud, counterfeit goods, and the facilitation of illegal immigration.
Key figures at a glance:
• 1 027 individuals arrested
• 599 kg of cocaine and 200 kg of heroin seized
• 1.3 tonnes of cannabis seized
