SIRIUS Project

More than half of all criminal investigations today include a cross-border request to access electronic evidence (e-evidence), such as texts, e-mails or messaging apps. To respond to the increasing need for transnational access to e-evidence for Internet-based investigations, Europol, in close partnership with Eurojust and the European Judicial Network (EJN), created the SIRIUS Project, in October 2017. The project is a platform that helps investigators to cope with the complexity and volume of information in a rapidly changing online environment by providing guidelines and tools, and by sharing experience with peers, both online and in person. SIRIUS is an important reference point, enabling practitioners to develop their knowledge when obtaining electronic data from online service providers (OSPs). Eurojust is in charge of the judicial component of the project, providing technical training to practitioners, and managing and monitoring the project’s forum for the members of the judiciary.

The multidisciplinary SIRIUS community on the restricted Europol Platform of Experts (EPE) has access to a wide range of resources, updated continuously. It is represented by all 28 Member States and several third States that have an operational agreement with Europol. Going forward, SIRIUS will continue to provide high-quality training both through the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Training (CEPOL) platform and in person, innovative tools to assist with online investigations, as well as up-to-date guidelines reflecting the latest changes in judicial and law enforcement policies of major OSPs. SIRIUS will further build on its strong partnership with Eurojust and the EJN, both of which significantly contribute to the judicial perspective of the project.

The SIRIUS Project has received funding from the European Commission's Service for Foreign Policy Instruments under grant agreement No Pl/2017/391-896.

If you would like to get in touch, or if you would like to join the EPE, please contact sirius.eurojust@eurojust.europa.eu. Please note that the SIRIUS platform on the EPE is restricted to judicial and law enforcement authorities.
